Summer 2022

June 10, 2022
by William Cliff

Hello all!

I wanted to take a minute to write out a quick introduction of myself and a brief explanation of what we do here in the Wilderness Program.

My name is William Cliff, I was born in High Point, North Carolina in 1995. Even though my birth state is a twenty one plus hour drive from Maine, I’ve always viewed Maine as my home. Growing up our family would always spend at least a week, if not more, in the great State of Maine.

As soon as I was old enough to go to camp as a camper, we would go. I have very fond memories of Pioneer camp, building rockets and learning survival skills in the outdoor sessions. At the ripe old age of 14, my mom signed me up for the LIT (Leader in Training) program and started my journey in the Wilderness Program.

Since that point in time I was involved in volunteering my time during the summers at some capacity or another, whether as staff, counselor, or in the Wilderness program. There were summers where I spent the whole summer here and others where I was only here for a week or two. God kept camp involved in my life, and it has been a tremendous aid in my walk in Him.

During the summer of 2017, I got my guides license and spent my time in the summers almost exclusively leading river trips for Living Waters and Canoe the Wild. I am fortunate to have had many mentors in the wilderness program, and without their help, I know my journey as a guide would not have been as smooth, and more importantly my journey as a Christian wouldn’t be as fruitful as it has been.

Our program operates under the verse “the heavens declare the glories of God”. We believe that God created the world and everything in it and that all things He made can point us back to Him if we look closely at them. Simply put, creation is evidence enough to point anyone to the conclusion that there is a creator. During our trips, we confront this reality in the beauty of the Maine woods. Whether that is on the ledges of Umsaskis Lake on the Allagash Wilderness Waterway or carefully picking our way across Knifes Edge in Baxter State park. These potent examples of beauty in creation make devotions come alive in a new way. Our participants are given time to ponder the words of God in the world He made around a campfire being led by committed Christians who not only want to help them grow in their walk with Christ, but also to grow themselves.

We hope to see you this summer!

Godspeed,

~Wild Bill
